Performance Solution Scenario: Exit Stair, Comparison to a Fire-Isolated Stairway
Identified Design Issue
The exit stairway will not comply with some of the requirements of AS 1428.1 Clause 8.
Departure from Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions
The exit stairway will not fully comply with AS 1428.1 Clause 8, as it will not be provided with handrail extensions, tactile ground surface indicators (TGSIs), and an outer handrail.
The Performance Solution
The exit stairway serves the same functions as a fire-isolated stairway and is used only for emergency egress. As such, the stairway will meet all fire-isolated exit stair requirements (i.e., slip resistance, a single compliant handrail, and contrasting nosing strips).
This example is a hypothetical scenario and must not be used for any specific project.
Assessments must be tailored for each project.
