Performance Solution Scenario: Stair Intermediate Landing

Identified Design Issue

The internal handrail will likely have a vertical section or an inconsistent height.

Departure from Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions

Due to spatial constraints within the existing building, the first ascending riser from the mid-landing is not set forward at a depth of one stair tread, resulting in an angled section on the internal handrail as it turns around the intermediate landing.

The Performance Solution

While the existing stair mid-landing design will be accepted, the stairway must be upgraded to meet compliance with AS 1428.1 in all aspects, including two handrails, TGSIs, and contrasting nosing strips. Lighting will also be improved.

This example is a hypothetical scenario and must not be used for any specific project.

Assessments must be tailored for each project.
